Jeevan Mukti Viveka of Swamy Vidyaranya, is an important Sanskrit text on Advaita Vedanta. Swami Vidyaranya, poorvasharma Name, Madhavacharya, is a Statesman and saint of the fourteenth Century. He is the 12 th Jagadguru of Sri Sringeri peetha between 1380 CE & 1386 CE according to the records of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetha . Some texts say this period as 1377 CE to 1386. Sri Madhavacharya said to have born in the year 1296 CE in Ekasila (Present Warangal) and it is believed that he lived for over 100 years.

There is always difference of opinion on birth and Videha Mukti dates of great men. We shall only take what they have given to us than bothering about their personal details.

This is my humble effort to write in series, the selected parts of Jeevan Mukti Viveka so that it serves all those who have interest in the subject but have no time to go through the original text.

Let us begin with a question:

What is the liberation? What is the evidence for attaining liberation? If there is any, how can this be accomplished? Even if so, what is the purpose of Liberation?

The Answer is :- We experience pleasure & pain through the function of mind conceiving itself as the performer of all actions and enjoyer of the fruits of such actions. This is the bondage because of this we will not taste the bliss, which is our true nature. The cessation of this bondage is liberation.

Question: – whether this bondage is the witness or of the mind? If it is of the witness, it is removed by the knowledge of the reality. If it is of the mind, it is not possible, since it is inherent in the thing itself. The agency of the mind in actions could be removed when it is possible to remove the fluidity from the water and heat from the fire. This is not possible because fluidity in water and the heat in the fire are naturally inherent in them.
